- January 21, 2026 - Department of State Immigrant Visa Travel Ban Countries:

Effective January 21, 2026, the Department of State is pausing all immigrant visa issuances to applicants who are nationals of the following countries (*this does not apply to non-immigrant visa applications):

Afghanistan, Albania, Algeria, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Bahamas, Bangladesh, Barbados, Belarus, Belize, Bhutan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Brazil, Burma, Cambodia, Cameroon, Cape Verde, Colombia, Cote d’Ivoire, Cuba, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Dominica, Egypt, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Fiji, The Gambia, Georgia, Ghana, Grenada, Guatemala, Guinea, Haiti, Iran, Iraq, Jamaica, Jordan, Kazakhstan, Kosovo, Kuwait, Kyrgyz Republic, Laos, Lebanon, Liberia, Libya, Moldova, Mongolia, Montenegro, Morocco, Nepal, Nicaragua, Nigeria, North Macedonia, Pakistan, Republic of the Congo, Russia, Rwanda, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Syria, Tanzania, Thailand, Togo, Tunisia, Uganda, Uruguay, Uzbekistan, and Yemen

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Proposed Citizenship Fee Changes

On June 23, 2026, the Department of Homeland Security issued a proposed rule to drastically increase the cost of U.S. citizenship. In addition to raising standard fees, this proposal would completely eliminate both the $380 reduced fee option and all low-income fee waivers for the N-400 application.

Current Status: The public comment period closed on August 24, 2026, and the government is currently reviewing the feedback.

When does it take effect? There is no active effective date yet. Once the finalized rule is published, it will likely take 30 to 60 days to go into effect.

What this means for you: The current, lower fees and fee-reduction programs are still fully available today. If you are eligible for citizenship, I strongly recommend filing your application immediately to secure the lower rates before these changes become law.
